My son’s first experience in the USA

Arrival in early January

On Jan 1, we arrived in Portland International Airport. Before we met our host family, I taught Keke “Happy New Year”. He practiced it a little bit and then greeted Uncle Allen.

After two hours’ driving, we arrived at our host family. Immediately, Keke took off his outfit and his shoes, flying into the living room. As a kid from a populous area, Keke had never had such a good experience with many pets at home.

His way to communicate in English

One day, I asked Keke to share Pizza with Uncle Allen.  Then, I waited to see how Keke could “speak” in English. Unexpectedly, he quickly turned to uncle and said “Uncle”. Uncle Allen turned to him and Keke pointed to Pizza, asking ”Yes? No?” Uncle Allen said “Yes”.  Perfect!  Three words with body language exactly conveyed his meaning.

The other day, a sub teacher did attendance first. He asked Keke “Hot lunch or cold lunch”. Keke answered “cold”. The teacher didn’t get it and asked again. Keke asked “what?” The sub teacher repeated the question “hot or cold?” Keke said “cold”. The teacher repeated “cold?” Keke answered “yeah”. Three words in a conversation! I come to enjoy watching Keke communicate in English!

His happy school life

After two weeks of learning, he feels that it is so easy to be a good student here and it is also easy to reach the teacher’s expectations. Every day, he is confident in getting involved in class activities. He cheered and laughed from his heart when he won many flash cards of High Frequent Words.

First experience in snow

The air in our neighbourhood is so good for Keke, who is allergic to dust and air pollution. That kid who used to cough a lot now is energetic and full of life. Every day, he studies hard during school time and plays hard after school.

Best of all, we had a big snow experience this February. Uncle Allen drove us to the hill nearby and all of us played snow fight. We threw snow balls to the others, running and laughing.  We left our happiness and joy in the snow.

A valuable experience in the USA

These days in the USA will definitely be a memorable and unforgettable days in our lives. He is exposed to English language immersion and has access to experiencing a different culture. Interaction with different kids from different family background makes him more open-minded and flexible to see the world from a totally new perspective.

I feel lucky and blessed to have my son come to the USA. Life is like a box of chocolates and you will never know what you are going to get. Hopefully, Keke has got the “chocolate” he loves and he will definitely benefit from this lovely and eye-opening experience in the USA.
